Animation.

Most people know that it all started with a mouse (Disney reference if you didn’t catch that!). These days, it plays a key role in modern design, evolving from traditional hand-drawn techniques into a wide range of digital formats. Whether you’re crafting engaging web elements, immersive 3D worlds, or interactive game characters, understanding the different types of animation helps you choose the right method for each project. In this article, we’ll answer the question: “What is animation?” and break down the most prominent types used today.

So what is animation?

Animation is a method by which static drawings are manipulated to appear as moving images. These figures have now evolved from 2D to 3D digitally configured objects. Traditionally, animation was hand-drawn which made it difficult and time-consuming to create. Today, thanks to advances in digital tools, animators can produce work faster, with a wider variety of techniques available across multiple platforms.

The Different Types of Animation

There are now many different types of animation. Yes that’s right, there are different types of animations. Here’s a few we can discuss:

Stop Motion Animation

Stop motion involves photographing objects frame-by-frame, making slight adjustments between each shot to create fluid movement.

Objects moving as a photo is taken for each shot.
Requires stable lighting conditions to make the animation seamless.
Most likely will need to learn how to use and create detailed puppets.

One of the most famous studios who create stop motion animated films is Laika Studios.

2D Traditional Animation

This classic form of animation involves drawing every frame by hand, creating smooth, lifelike motion.

Requires a lot of patience to draw all the frames
Needs strong knowledge of traditional drawing skills
Most likely will need a good workstation to prevent RSI.

While time-consuming, this technique is still revered for its charm, with works like Disney’s The Lion King standing the test of time.

2D Digital Animation

Digital tools have simplified 2D animation, making it faster and more flexible than its traditional counterpart. This format is perfect for projects that demand speed without sacrificing quality.

Has its own ‘rigging’ system which can make animation faster.
More flexible than traditional animation

3D Animation

3D animation creates depth by working in a three-dimensional space, often used in films, games, and virtual reality.

Requires an understanding of the 3D space and software
Uses ‘rigs’ to move the 3D models
Digital animation tends to be easier and won’t necessarily require the animator to have much drawing skills
Different processes when it comes to video animation or games animation

3D animation offers incredible realism and is ideal for creating immersive experiences.

Web Animation

Web animation focuses on lightweight, interactive elements that enhance user experiences on websites and apps.

Requires an understanding of web development and requires knowledge of coding languages
More technical and doesn’t really require much creative drawing skills at all
Completely interactive so the animation is very different to animating for videos
Needs to be light-weight as it is browser-based.

This format is widely used for banners, micro-interactions, and engaging user interfaces.

Games Animation

Games animation is a blend of art and technology, creating interactive animations for characters and environments within video games.

Can either be 2D or 3D
It can also either be for web or for specific other platforms (ie. playstation). Each platform has a different type of coding required.
Games animation is interactive so the animations need to loop and, for some characters, be triggered by the user.

It requires close collaboration between designers, animators, and developers to deliver smooth gameplay.
